My Story

The Roots Of Shadow Corner

Shadow Corner wasn’t created because I set out to build a coaching business.

It began with my own search for answers.

For years, I found myself asking:

Why do certain patterns keep repeating?
Why haven’t I reached that “sweet” spot in healing?
How is it that we understand what happens to us but still feel stuck?

Those questions became the foundation of the work I do today.

I'm Sayen Gates, a Relationship and Communication Pattern Specialist, and I support people in recognizing the patterns that shape their relationships, communication, choices, and sense of self so they can begin creating change from the inside out.

Chapter One

How Shadow Corner Began

My story begins in South Carolina, where family, connection, and community have always been important parts of who I am.

In 2017, I graduated as a Certified Medical Assistant and began what would become an eight-year journey in healthcare. I loved caring for people, but over time I began to recognize something important:

Healing doesn't stop at the physical.

There are emotional experiences, beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that influence how we move through life just as deeply.

Long before I had a name for it, I found myself naturally having conversations with people about those deeper parts of life—encouraging reflection, offering perspective, and helping people make sense of what they were experiencing.

In 2020, I decided to bring those conversations to a larger audience through TikTok.

What began as a personal outlet for sharing my experiences with spirituality, faith, self-discovery, and resilience slowly became something much bigger.

People began sharing their stories.

They began asking questions.

And I realized there was a real need for honest conversations about the things we often carry beneath the surface.

That was the beginning of Shadow Corner.

Chapter Two

Finding My Voice

Shadow Corner gave me permission to speak openly about the things many of us experience but don't always know how to put into words.

Self-discovery.

Healing.

Relationships.

Boundaries.

Faith.

Identity.

The patterns we inherit and the ones we unknowingly continue.

But Shadow Corner wasn't only about what I had learned. It became a space where I could share what I was still learning, too.

My own experiences taught me that sometimes the greatest wisdom doesn't come from having everything figured out.

It comes from being willing to look honestly at yourself.

That realization shaped the way I coach today.

I don't believe transformation begins with becoming someone completely different.

It begins with understanding who you are, what shaped you, and why you respond the way you do.

Chapter Three

The Conversation Became More…

One year after Shadow Corner began, my Aunt Deb passed away.

Her loss brought me back to the conversations we used to share—sitting together, catching up on life, exchanging stories, and listening to the wisdom she had gathered along the way.

Those conversations stayed with me.

They reminded me how powerful it can be when someone simply creates space for you to talk, reflect, and see something about yourself from a different perspective.

That became the inspiration behind Coach Talk, along with other Shadow Corner conversations and series such as Monday Mindfulness, Thursday PSA, and Word for Thought.

What began as a way to honor the wisdom my aunt and mother shared with me became another way to pass those lessons forward.

The conversation became part of the work.

And the work continued to evolve.

My Approach

Down to the Roots

Every behavior has a beginning.

The choices we make, relationships we build, fears we carry, and habits we struggle to break all have a story behind them.

Instead of focusing only on what is happening on the surface, I believe in looking deeper.

Together, we explore the experiences, beliefs, and patterns that may be influencing how you show up today.

Because lasting change isn't about simply changing a behavior.

It's about understanding what created it in the first place.

Facing Your Shadow

Shadow integration isn't about living in the past.

It's about understanding the parts of yourself you may have learned to hide, suppress, protect, or ignore.

Sometimes the behaviors that no longer serve us once served a purpose.

They helped us cope.

They helped us survive.

They helped us navigate situations we didn't yet have the tools to understand.

But what protected us then may not be what serves us now.

Through self-awareness and self-acceptance, we can begin recognizing those patterns and choosing responses that reflect who we are becoming, not simply what we've been through.

Foresight for Self

Understanding your past is only part of transformation.

The next step is deciding what you want to create moving forward.

Once you understand your patterns, you can begin making choices that align with your values, relationships, goals, and vision for your life.

That may mean communicating differently.

Creating stronger boundaries.

Building healthier relationships.

Taking a new opportunity.

Trusting yourself more.

Or simply becoming more intentional about the person you want to be.

Awareness gives you the information.
Intention gives you the direction.

Mindful, Not Just Busy

Life can move so quickly that we become more focused on managing everything around us than noticing what is happening within us.

Mindfulness creates space to pause.

To notice your thoughts.

To recognize your emotions.

To understand your reactions.

And, most importantly, to create space between what you feel and how you choose to respond.

That awareness can change the way you communicate, make decisions, set boundaries, and navigate relationships.

Where We Are Today

For a long time, I thought growth meant becoming stronger and learning how to survive what life placed in front of me. But along the way, I realized something deeper: the things that helped us survive can also be the things that shape how we communicate, connect, set boundaries, and show up in relationships.

That realization changed the direction of my work.

What began as Shadow Corner the Podcast has evolved into Relationship & Communication Pattern Coaching because I believe lasting change begins with understanding what’s underneath the way we relate to ourselves and others.

Today, I support people in recognizing the patterns influencing their relationships, communicating their needs with greater clarity, establishing boundaries they can actually enforce, and creating healthier ways of connecting without losing themselves in the process.

Because I've learned that you can love people without carrying them, set boundaries without becoming cold, and choose yourself without abandoning the people you care about.

That's the work of Shadow Corner: moving from repeating patterns to creating relationships where you can truly thrive.

You don't have to lose yourself to have healthy relationships.
